At MorMindful Therapy & Psychiatry of South Florida, we offer IQ and Gifted testing for children in Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale & Boynton Beach.

Gifted testing for children is an essential part of the education journey you and your child will take together.

It is important to test your child for gifted because it will help you gather information about how they learn, what kind of class they should be in and what their future may look like. Gifted testing happens primarily through an IQ test administered by a licensed clinical psychologist. The best age to begin is around 4 or 5 years old just before your child starts kindergarten.

You might be asking yourself what exactly does gifted mean? This is a good question. The answer is a child who is gifted exceeds the average IQ (Intelligence Quotient) by thirty or more points placing them in the very superior intellectual range. 2.5% of children out of 100 are at this level. Why is it important to know your child's IQ?

If a child has an IQ of 130 or above and is mistakenly placed in a regular class, they will be learning side-by-side other children that learn slower and need concepts repeated more often rather then moving ahead more quickly. The gifted child will not be challenged enough in a regular classroom setting, which can lead to boredom, a drop in grades, behavioral problems and anger. The biggest risk factor may be that your child does not reach their full potential because the teachers they are exposed to are teaching the rest of the class at a lower level. Teachers in gifted classes have special training and expertise that help the child's inner ability and creativity flourish.

The WISC-V is the most current and common intelligence test for kids used in the state of Florida. It should be administered by a licensed clinical psychologist because they will also asses other factors while examining your kid for example emotional range, communication and overall mental health, which can be incorporated into the report. Psychologists are also trained to look for potential learning disabilities. Even if your child is gifted, they can still have a learning disability. If this is the case, reach out to your child's school and ask how you an create a special learning program for children who are gifted and also have a learning disability such as dyslexia or ADHD.  Another reason why is is important to test your child for gifted around the age of 4 or 5 is because if they have any developing problems with learning, it will not effect the IQ test. At that young of an age, the test is based mostly on intuitive and organic intelligence rather then reading and writing which can produce a false score in children who are both gifted and have a learning disability.

A child's IQ test takes anywhere between 45-60 minutes.

Scoring and writing of the report usually takes a couple of days to a week to get the results. The gifted test for kids in Boca Raton, Florida will generate a Full Scale IQ that represents a child's general intellectual ability. It covers five basic index scores which represents Comprehension, Working Memory, Processing Speed, Visual Spatial and Fluid Reasoning.  Each primary area of intelligence helps shed light on a child's cognitive ability and potential across their entire system of thinking.
