Though I had the opportunity to dabble in private practice early on, the bulk of my education, therapeutic skills, and clinical experience were developed while working in dual diagnosis mental health and substance abuse treatment centers here in Florida. I grasped the opportunity to learn from others and fine-tune my therapeutic skills while becoming a Board Certified Qualified Supervisor. My ambition for continuing education resulted in obtaining to significant certifications in recent years. The first, in CCTP (Certified Clinical Trauma Professional) increased my insight and skill in working with victims of trauma, which proved to be of critical importance given the high volume of under-reported cases of abuse. The second, in CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy treatment for Insomnia), has proven to be essential during individual therapy. Given the degree to which, poor sleep habits affect our ability to be effective and reach our potential.

Although Depression, Anxiety, and Trauma often stand out as more common and severe mental health problems, less common emotional symptoms related to anger management, grief and loss, guilt and shame, stress, and low self-esteem are often the source of significant emotional pain and suffering. Tasked with “reading between the lines” and “looking at what isn’t being said”, the therapeutic process remains full of new possibilities and opportunities. Of keen importance to me as a clinician, is proper diagnosis and discovery of root causes of emotional imbalance. The process of identifying inner strengths helps individuals develop courage, gain insight, and change perspective.

The process of exploring our own challenges would not be complete without addressing Relationships and Spirituality - both of which are like silent partners in our everyday search for life balance. Although it can be easy to “write off” or minimize the significance of relationship challenges and lack of spirituality, these two aspects of the “Self” carry more weight than most of us would like to admit. As we join together, and the therapeutic process develops, so will motivation, hope, and self-awareness.

I look forward to meeting you at MorMindful.

Andrew S. Kaplan, LMFT, MHC, CCTP, CBT-I

Life’s inequalities have a way of shaping the way we think and understand the world around us. Like many of us, those inequalities led me to a lot of search and discovery that eventually influenced my decision to pursue a career focused in helping others.

While I was raised in the North Eastern part of the US, my search for “what makes us tick” eventually brought me to Florida where I completed my journey at Barry University, obtaining a duel Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling. Barry U’s CARF accreditation standards assured excellence in clinical practice and training. This was followed by state licensure and 15 years of post-graduate experience in the field of Counseling as a licensed clinician.
